No matter the garden style, fine pruning is one of the most beneficial things that can be done for the health and beauty of a garden. Fine pruning brings out the beauty of a plant, associates it better with the space around it, improves its health, and improves the conditions for the other plants around it.

Bring out the beauty:  Trees and shrubs, and especially shrubs, if left alone often begin to appear flat, lacking the attractiveness that depth brings. Through good fine pruning openings can be made to introduce depth and also reveal the attractive branch structures in the plant. If done well, the plant maintains or even more appears natural. In addition, harmony, proportion, and balance can be improved within the plant.

Associate better with space around it: Often plants have a clear function in a garden, for example as a visual screen, a resting place for the eye, lead the eye, brighten a space, create flowers, add visual interest, create balance, increase harmony, improve proportions, or visually soften hard spaces. Fine pruning helps achieve whatever this function is.

Improve health: As trees and shrubs grow, some parts begin to become weaker while others become stronger. This is usually due to the distribution of light. By better distributing light across a plant these lopsided distributions can be brought into a better balance. But if left alone weaker points of the plant can begin to attract pests and diseases, or can break and die off creating wounds. 

Improve health of neighbors: Often trees and shrubs if left alone will shade out plants around them, plants that often would greatly benefit from more light and would look and flower much better.
